Cordless Kettle FAQ

How do you keep a kettle scale free?

This is an age old problem and especially so in hard-water areas. There’s two approaches you can take with kettle scale and thats prevention and cure. There’s also the third – both!

Prevention can be done in a few ways but the most common are:

  • Steel De-scaler – these are like small scouring pads that sit in your kettle. The theory being that they fur up instead of your element. They do work but you will still end up furring eventually and need cleaning.
  • Water Purifier – requires more work than the de-scaler above but it generally proves more effective as it fully purifies the water of all lime and other particulates before you use it in your kettle. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes form mains fitted to jug Brita filters.

Curing a furred kettle has two methods that are both just as effective but one is a lot cheaper. Vinegar is by far the easiest, safest and cheapest option though it can take longer sitting to break the lime down. The more expensive but quicker method is to use de-scaler product and the best one of those is by Oust.

Is there a fire risk if the bottom of a cordless kettle is wet when I put it on the powerbase and turn it on?

The “power base” should be isolated from the kettle. Many times a kettle will be wet when putting it back on the heater. There shouldn’t be any problem here at all. For example a coffee pot – the pot is often wet when it is put back on the heater. Don’t submerge the heater in water when cleaning it though, and if you do let it dry out thoroughly before plugging it back in.

What does a cordless kettle use to heat water?

An electric “cordless” kettle is that the base has a cord but the kettle can be removed from the base (without a cord connecting it) after the water has heated. So there is a cord that connects to the kettle’s base, but the kettle can be picked up and taken anywhere. I have one and I like it a lot.

What are the British standards on a cordless kettle?

  • BS EN 55014-2:1997, Electromagnetic compatibility. Requirements for household appliances, electric tools and similar apparatus.
  • BS EN 60335-2-64:2000 Specification for safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Particular requirements for commercial electric kitchen machines. Commercial electric kitchen machines

What causes the power trip off when I plug in my cordless kettle?

This is likely caused by a poor earth or shorting in the kettle. It should be repaired or discarded and a new kettle bought. This site helps you find the best cordless kettle so why not start here. :)

How does the boiled water switch off the cordless kettle?

Each kettle is different but they all use some form of thermostatic sensor to determine the correct temperature has been reached for the water.
