Around 2005 there was a huge public health panic over the use of BPA containing plastics in drinking bottles. Bisphenol A is an organic compound found in many different types of plastic and it has been linked to hormone imabalances and cancer in humans.
Its notoriously difficult to get any reliable information on the subject of BPA containing plastics and their use in kettles as creating BPA-free plastics is more expensive and no one wants to admit their products contain a carcinogen.
In 2008 after numerous studies the EU concluded that the levels of BPA people are exposed too in everyday life is well within tolerance levels and no further regulations are required. However, it was decided that in early 2011 BPA plastics would be completely banned in the use of babies bottles.
If you are concerned with BPA contamination in your kettle then you can always buy a stainless steel kettle instead. Although we do have a list of manufacturers that claim to be BPA free:
- Morphy Richards (colour plastic kettles only)
- Kenwood – all BPA free
- Delonghi – all BPA free
- Prestige – all BPA free
